I’ve been really interested in making my own tool handles recently from limb wood around our farm. I feel there are many benefits to making one’s own handle, environmentally and ergonomically. Instead of purchasing a pre-made handle, you can custom fit one to your body for next to nothing. You can also experiment with the slight curves in the wood to make the tool perform more efficiently. So far I’ve made a scythe handle (a “snath”) and a new handle for my favourite garden hoe. I’m very pleased with the results, and will be making new ones for all of our old tools that need a handle. Try it yourself!
